Question 19

Can the limits with the water channels within the competition site be modified in both levels, +1m and +5m?

The height of the ship canals, shown in the competition board, can be modified in some points to build specific docks and facilities for boat storage, always maintaining the overall area of water as indicated in the attachments 7 and 8. The proposal of new canals and/or a secondary canal system, integrated into the architecture project, is allowed.

Question 20

As regards to the driveways inside the red hatched area, can be also considered the routes around the Pavilion B or they must be contained in the hatched area?

The Pavilion B and its adjacent lot are completely covered by the competition area.

Question 21

With regard to one of the previous answers, we seek clarification on the destination and the vocation of the Pavilion B (blue)

The competition notice does not set any constraints on the functions of the pavilion B. It is not required to give any indications on the functions and the volume because the external outline of the pavilion B should be maintained. Moreover should be respected the safety regulation and the accessibility to the emergency exits

Question 22

Should the documents be signed digitally by the group leader or as an alternative by any other team member?

As referred to Article 9 of the Competition Notice “The documents requested regarding the projects must, on pain of automatic exclusion, be absolutely anonymous in every part. both explicitly and implicitly, and must adhere strictly to the requirements specified. In no case may competitors breach anonymity with symbols, signs or other significant elements, on pain of exclusion”. The administrative documents must be signed by each team member. Moreover, each team member must fill out the application form with their personal data.

Question 23

We ask for some clarification about the ownership of the areas. Are them privates, publics or state-owned or is there another owner? In the event that these areas are state-owned, is it foreseen their declassification? when?

The areas covered by the competition are owned by the Municipality of Genoa or by municipally-owned companies. The competition does not consider the areas covered by the Blueprint for Genoa owned by the state.

Question 24

In the competition notice are reported the maximum height for the new buildings, which cannot exceed the value reported. What is the maximum height?

The new buildings, to be realized inside the areas reported in the planimetric-volumetric diagram (see attachments 7,8,9), cannot exceed the height s reported in the attachment 9, except for specific and punctual “landmarks”.

Question 25

Car parking should be realized underground? can they be also outside?

Attachment A of the competition notice: “Car parking below street level must be provided for the new built volumes, installed preferably underground, for a total surface area of 20,000 m2 . They may be supplemented with further car parks for other existing or new sports or sailing activities.”

Question 26

The competition notice reports an overall size of at most 250 square meters for each commercial activity. Is this a mandatory indication or is it possible to realize activities with bigger dimensions, as a result of an economic analysis?

Attachment A of the competition notice: “All commercial and retail activities must be located in premises with overall dimensions of no more than 250 m2 , with the exception of premises devoted to specialist goods or activities, connected functionally to the new developments (such as sales of equipment for water sports or nautical activities in general, or for specific forms of technical assistance), which may be larger”. Commercial activities can cover from 0 to 250 square meters, or more for the over mentioned case.

Question 27

The total number of square meters requested by the competition is completely different from that reported in the programme Blueprint for Genoa by Renzo Piano Building Workshop. Considering that the competition is strictly referred to the Blueprint for Genoa, we seek clarification on the buildability index and the building density.

The planimetric-volumetric diagram described in the attachments 7,8 and 9 is a partial and re-worked version, approved by the RPBW, of the contents of the Blueprint for Genoa. It follows the indexes and planning parameters in accordance with the planning regulation in force, which prevail on the general data included in the Blueprint for Genoa.

Question 28.1

How far from the red hatched area should the buildings be placed? Or can they be flush placed?

There are not distance restrictions from the red hatched area

Question 28.2

Is it possible to design projections for walkways from the height +5 next to the canals positioned at the height +1?

It is possible to design contained projections and gaps.

Question 29 

By "signing digitally the requested documents" does the competition organizer imply a valid legal certificate allowing a firm/natural person to sign documents by use of electronic means?

Where required by the regulation in force in your country, it is necessary to sign digitally. Where not required, it is possible to sign on your own responsibility.

Question 30

Please roughly indicate the height of the Renzo Piano Tower.

The approximate height of the roof of the Port Tower designed by Renzo Piano is 65 mt above sea level

Question 31

Are the 2.70m and 3.20m heights referred to at page 68 paragraph 4 of the competition brief finish floor to finish floor heights or clear heights?

It means usable clear span.

Question 32

Please indicate the navigable/clear height necessary in case of a bridge linking the Pavilion B island with the rest of the site.

It is necessary to ensure the circulation of safety boats between the Pavillion B island and the rest of the site. The choice of the -mandatory- bridge is in accordance with the attachment A of the competition notice on page 64.

Question 33

Please indicate the depths of the canals drawn in the sections: considering a parking access to the car parkings of the buildings on Pavilion B island may depend on them.

The average depth is -5 meters.

Question 34.1

As regards to the indications on the intended uses reported in the Competition notice (attachment A), we wonder if, in accordance with the city plan of the Municipality of Genoa, in addition to the uses suggested we can consider other uses such as “services”, as specified in the urban regulation. Indeed, all the uses foreseen by the competition are related to as much public services and the competition does not indicate any prevision to their fulfillment

Question 34.2

If the answer to question 34.1 is "yes", we wonder if the size addresses to service uses may be increased compared to the limits reported in the Competition notice (Attachment A), in other words this quantity should be included in the flexibility limits reported in the same document even if a brief calculation seems to exclude this possibility.

The city plan is not binding. The reference document of the competition is the competition notice. The surface for public services, even if specified by the competition, can be considered as additional in accordance with the city plan.

Question 34.3

As regards to the definition of the intended uses, we ask if for each category the competitor can choose freely to include similar uses (for example, residential may be considered residence for self-sufficient elderly people or for students; commercial and artisanal activities can include bar, pharmacy, restaurants, personal services, etc.) or we must referred to the indication included in the city plan and urban regulation.

As regards to the sport activities for the Pavilion S reported in the Competition notice and the new CONI application for the renovation of the Pavilion and the related feasibility study, we ask if it is possible to include in the ideas project this hypothesis without changing anything.

The intended uses reported in the Competition notice seems to be too restrictive and overestimate for residential uses. We ask if to respect the economic sustainability of the project, the quantities established by the competition for each uses may be modified more than the 10% specified.

Question 35.1

Is it possible to visit the competition area the 8th of October, even if there is still the boat show?

As reported in the competition notice, the competition area is still busy the 10th of October for dismantling phases. For this reason, it is necessary to postpone the visit until next week.

Is it possible to visit from inside the pavilions S and B?

If you need to visit from inside the Pavilion S and B, you have to arrange and appointment.

Question 36.1

Where should I choose the intervention area?

The competition areas are inside the red hatched area as reported in the attachment 7, 8 and 9. The limits of the competition area are indicated with a red trace in the attachment 7 and 8.

Question 36.2

Must I be part of the Italian Order of architects to be elegible to participate in the competition?

Foreign competitors have not to be registered in the Italian Register of Architects.

Question 37

As regards to question n°9, It seems that the competition area will not be anymore a trade fair complex; can the competitors know what will be the future of the Pavilion B –which with its strong personality conditions the project? Can we modify this pavilion to respect the general indication of the competition notice?

The Pavilion B should not be modified because it is outside the competition area. The overall competition area will not be anymore a trade fair complex. This use remains only for the Pavilion B.

What is meant by “possible or allowed landmarks” over the 22.80 height (amsl): punctual marks or more complex parts such as technical installations (light, communication towers, poles, ...) or other?

Limited and punctual landmarks of any kind.

Question 39

What can we suggest on the urban space immediately outside the area covered by the competition? for example: the connection with the city, can be described in the plan and scale requested- to explain the effectiveness of the project – also over the competition border at least in general terms?

It can be described suggestions on the urban area next to the competition to contextualize the project, that must be inside the indicated area.

Question 40

It is required an elevation at 1:200 (all the rest at 1:500 and 1:100 - first board): is it referred to the elevation of the residences? Can we illustrate other elevations at 1:200? Should be understood that the jury will be interested only in this elevation?

As referred to Article 8 of the competition notice the elevation at 1:200 is realized with excerpts considered most significant.

Question 41

Is it possible to suggest different kind of residences for different kind of users (first homes, holiday homes, small space in support of berths)? In the document BP the residential area is indicated only inside the H sector, is it possible to position it in other places outside the hatched area between the new dock and the north street?

It is enough to respect the surface and the proportion reported in the competition notice.
